Sure you can install a "Linux System" and switch back and fourth between windows and the "Linux System".

Easiest way is to have windoze installed first and then install linux. Depending on your distro, it should detect windoze on your computer and create an entry in it's boot loader (either grub or lilo) allowing you to choose which OS you want to boot.

u can download the distro and make an iso cd, or the easiest buy the distro from a place like cheapbytes.com and install. there are many distros, mandrake, fedora, etc. mandrake is easy to install. try to find instructions for dual booting with 98, its easy once u get the hang of it, but it can be testy if you select the wrong distribution, i assume you are a newbie since you ask this Q.

You can download most distros from www.linuxiso.org. Probably the most popular "live" CD is knoppix, but there are others as well like gentoo, gnoppix (like knoppix but uses gnome instead of KDE) and SuSE.

go for hard drive based (if you have room) and use lilo but be careful not to wipe the mbr out from windbloze
