Help please. I'm a newbie to linux and have Mandrake 9 and XP dualbooting. That works ok. Here's my problem. I also have another computer dual booting 98se and tried to no avail to install mandrake. It installd ok but when booting wouldnt get past detecting new hardware. It just hung there. I reformatted the HDD completely but the lilo 22.4.1 is still there. How do I get rid of it so I can begin again. PS. I like linux and detest Micro$oft.

Did you re-partition the drive? If you only re-format the root partition, I assume Lilo will still be in the boot partition....(i think?)

If you want to remove lilo from your Windows 98, then boot it up using a bootable floppy disk (for Windows 98) and at the prompt, type
fdisk /mbr
And by the way, if lilo couldn't boot your Windows 98, it means that there is something wrong with your /etc/lilo.conf!!! Make sure it points it to the right partition, /dev/hda1 or wherever Windows 98 resides. I've never had any problem using lilo to boot Linux with Window 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP!!!

Thank you guys for the prompt response. I'll try the fdisk option. Another question I had regarding this was, in my uneducated attempts to solve the problem I ended up reformating and reinstalling 98. That's ok, but I ended up with two windows options in the lilo boot screen. I'm sure the fdisk solution will cure this but I was wondering how this happened in the first place. Please excuse my ignorance and thanks again.
