Hi

Similar problems are caused from imperfect diskettes. I have seen similar effects, when the lilo diskettes have not been used for a while. Run lilo again, and create a couple of lilo boot diskettes - use new or verified (scanned) diskettes.

Hopefully you can boot from them.

search loadlin on google..

it uses windows 'boot.ini' file to load linux..so u dont have to write lilo/grub on MBR.. boot.ini will boot linu... so no headache about corrupted floppies

"...nobody else wants a change in the boot order..."

You can set the order and default boot option (which can also be windoze) in lilo, why not just do that?

If your MBR has a working lilo you can copy it to a floppy with:
$ dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1
