A newbie trying out Mandrake 7.2 on a 133MHZ pentium, 80 MB memory, 20 Gig hard drive. In general it instals okay except that, when the LiLo screen comes up it gives four choices 1)Linux, 2) linux-nfb, 3)fail safe and 4)floppy. It defaults in 5 seconds to 1) unless you use the arrow keys to move to a different choice. If I leave it default to Linux, the screen goes black and the computer locks up--the only choice is power down and restart. If I choose 2)--Linux-nfb--, things proceed in what I think is a normal manner and I can log on as either root or as a user. I tried to use DrakConf and choose either Graphics Conf or Change Screen Conf. the same thing happens, screen goes black and everything locks up. Need to power down and reboot to get going again. Note: I was in root for all the above. Thanks for any advice. Rod

If you are using Mandrake 7.2 it install GRUB, not LiLo; but both programs make same thing. GRUB and LiLo launches an image of Linux kernel in the /boot. Verify the image of the kernel that uses GRUB in the Linux tag. May be a kernel compiled to SCSI, and it can hang up the system if don't found a SCSI. Otherwise reinstall or compile a kernel to meet your system requirements. Also you can edit the Linux tag in GRUB to load the Linux image of the Linux-nfb tag. To make the Linux-nfb as the default tag is other option. Resume, the problem is not LiLo or GRUB, the problem is the kernel image that load.
