Download a selection of live CDs to try out and see which you personally prefer. Start with Knoppix, Kanotix, and Ubuntu live.

Live CDs rule because they:
Run without a hard disk if necessary.
Can be run without disturbing a hard disk install of Windows.
Can be run live for easy repair of hosed Linux (and Windows) installations and data recovery.
Can browse the net for install/config tips BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER installation.
I favor Debian, and run Kanotix on a variety of comps.
When you decide to do a hard disk install, do yourself a favor and use seperate hard drives and either a swap rack or TRIOS drive selector.
Sharing a hard disk made sense when they were expensive, but no more. Instead of running Linux on some old beater comp, just add a drive to your best machine. You'll have a much more enjoyable experience.

May not be the fastest route but you'll probably learn most building a system with Linux From Scratch closely followed by Gentoo (my current personal favourite). Slackware also gets my vote too as I've been using it for years....
