The latest version of SUSE is 9.1 although 9.2 will be out at the beginning of next month... From looking at the numbers, I bet 5.3 is old! You will find it supports more hardwares and the installation is nicer (I assume since I only got a chance to play with 6.1 and above).
I think it's about time you upgrade to the latest one!!!

Everything has changed. The desktop environment, KDE, is at version 3.[23] rather than 1.0. The kernel is 2.6, and all I remember about 2.0 kernels was having to provide an IRQ and I/O range to make sound work, like configuring an old DOS game. The 2.6 kernel runs on everything from embedded systems to supercomputers and supports most PC hardware. Configuring X no longer means risking blowing up your monitor, and fonts are at least on par with Windows XP. You'll be browsing with Mozilla or Firefox rather than...what, Netscape 4? Distrowatch doesn't track Netscape.

Of course all these features require better hardware. If you have less than 64Mb RAM, you'll be hurting. I don't know what comes with SUSE, but use something other than KDE if possible. Black/Flux/OpenBox and XFCE are good alternatives. If you don't run X, the latest SUSE will run at least as well as the old version, and an upgrade is definately advisable for security reasons.

You know something,,, suse might be pretty and supple but really is there a need to use up memory having 4 ways to configure everything or a variety of windows and colours etc,,surley it would be better to just have a one option system and use the memory for new inovattions??
