Hi All,

I've been going insane trying to get my computer to connect to my network.

My setup is as follows:
Router: WRT54GX v1.02.14
NIC: WMP54G

Router settings:
ssid - homenet
WPA-shared key
wpa 1.0 and 2.0 enabled
encryption - tkip
key: 12345678 - for testing purposes.
key renewal - 900sec

I have tried everything to get this to work, I know my setup of my drivers are fine on my computer, as I can connect to my friends network using wep64 on a linksys router.

in kubuntu when i look at knetworkmanager I can see my network, and when trying to connect it only allows me to select wpa-personal, etc...

however whenever i connect it comes up cannot connect to homenet.

I have tried changing the settings in interfaces to setup the details of my network manually for the card, still no luck.

I have also tested my connection by using no security, i.e. open network, however still no luck.

All help is soooo greatfully appreciated as I am trying to leave micro-hell!

Cheers,
Mike

From my experience with (K)ubuntu and my wifi (rt61 chipset) then forget it its such a pain in the backside to configure that the time you spend trying you could have installed a completly different OS - I'd go with ANY thing rather than (K)ubuntu - You'd be better off trying a "live distro". If it was me I'd go for PCLinuxOS that works theres only about 1-2% of the laptops that it wont work with (wifi) without using ndiswrapper or madwifi.

I have it on all my machines and it just worked straight out of the box.

Get it from http://www.pclinuxos.com/

good luck with ubuntu your going to need it.

Linux: Not a virus trojan spyware in sight !! Faster than Vista Oh and costs NOTHING.
Windows: Gets the odd Virus , Trogan, and Spyware. Slow too Oh and costs lots of £'s

I believe that it is inappropriate to direct others to use a different distribution as a solution to a problem. Please do not do that.

I am unfamiliar with the various flavors of Ubuntu, but I know they have an outstanding user community who will be more than eager to help you. Check out the Ubuntu Community Support Page where you can get links to their WEB forums, documentation, mailing lists, IRC Chat Channel setup information, and their Technical Answers System.

I use Ubuntu edgy and also experienced IMMENSE problems in getting Ubuntu to work with my wireless card. The only way to get it to work is to blacklist the native driver and use NDISwrapper which encapsulates the native windows drivers to work with Ubuntu. The below is my post on the Ubuntu forum which is EXACTLY what i had to do to get my card to work.Depending on your brand of card it may be similar:

Install ndiswrapper version 1.27 with the "make install" command after browsing to the correct directory IE cd /home/homefolder (where homefolder is replace with your name)

Browse to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and edit the file "blacklist" on the last line with:

#bad linux driver
blacklist bcm43xx (this is the default linux driver for linux complient hardware in this case where going to use ndiswrapper to encapusulate the windows driver in order to get your windows driver to work in a linux enviroment)

Browse to the directory where you have stored the following 2 files BCMWL5.INF & BCMWL5.SYS - both are required in order for your card to work correctly - Use the switch ndiswrapper -BCMWL5.INF to install the driver. NOTE THIS COMMAND IS CASE SENSITIVE SO WHICH EVER CASE THE DRIVER IS WRITTEN IN USE THAT BE IT CAPS OR LOWER CASE ( or the command will return an error with invalid driver )
Then run the switch ndiswrapper -l which will say hardware present (providing the card is inserted) and driver present (once it has been installed correctly)

run switch modprobe ndiswrapper. if no error is returned then the card has been installed and configured correctly.

Now go into network tools and configure the parameters of the card IE the SSID Encryption and Ip address be it dynamic or static.
