Am I a newbie, or what?!
I've just installed Knoppix 3.8 to my hard drive for faster performance, but I can't figure out how to get past the login screen.

When I re-start the computer, Knoppix goes through its bootup process, and eventually asks for my user name (peterp6) and password. It acknowledges that I input them correctly, then gives me a text prompt that looks like this: peterp6@dell266:~$

Any idea what I am supposed to enter next?

If you want to start the gui for a graphical desktop then you need to type startx or xstart something like that. Sorry it's been a while since I used linux but figured it would get you in the right direction since your post hasnt been answered in a couple days.

Might do a search on starting KDE GUI or something similar.

Chances are that if your are presented with a text login your graphical login may not work. If the command startx doesn't work then boot off your knoppix CD as you would for any other live CD, wait till it gets to the GUI, copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf on to a floppy (could be /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] if you have an older version), reboot back into your hard drive install and copy the file from the floppy into /etc/X11....reboot and you shold have a GUI login.

If startx does work, or if you carried out the above and it still boots to text mode, edit /etc/inittab and change the line:
id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:
