Dear group:
I succesfully created a bootable Knoppix CD and I see the Knoppix splash screen and then type "Knoppix lang=us".
It checks for system components and then Knoppix freezes when it gets to "Initializing System Services".
What is the problem?
Thanks!
wayne
P.S. - I am a Linux newbie so please have mercy!

Dear group:
I also tried "boot: knoppix noapm" and "boot: failsafe" and I still get the same results.
What now?
Thanks.
wayne

You could try any number of the following:
knoppix nodma
knoppix noapic
knoppix nousb
knoppix apm=off
knoppix nopcmcia
You can string them together as well, eg:
knoppix noapic apm=off nopcmcia

Dear 3Dave:
Thanks for the help. I will try those and let you know.
Also, I have an Adaptec SCSI card. Are there any issues you know of concerning Knoppix and Adaptec SCSI cards?
Thanks a bunch!
wayne

I haven't used knoppix, but adaptec cards
are pretty well supported under linux. I
use a 2940UW myself which is always
autodetected and I have never had a problem
with it (famous last words!=o)
Just noticed that you have a K62, have you
checked that the latest version of knoppix
supports it? If the binaries are compiled
for i686 it wont work. Maybe someone else
who has used it can confirm...?

Dear 3Dave:
That is an excellent point! I never tried this Knoppix boot disk on a PC with an Intel chip. I have an older Pentium 166 and 128MB of RAM.
Would that be enough to at least see if the CPU is the problem?
Thanks a bunch for the help!
wayne

Just checked on the knoppix website....
Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later)
Your K62 falls into this catagory.
If you have broadband and don't mind
downloading another ISO, both gentoo and
suse have live evaluation CDs...like
knoppix, you could give these a go.
Better still is to install linux...if you
have a spare hard drive you don't mind
wiping I would suggest that.
FYI:
i386
386 AMD 386
i486
486 AMD 486 equivalents, later labeled as
"586" and marketed against Pentium, also
similar WinChip, Cyrix, IBM, NexGen (bought
by AMD), using socket 5 and 7 i586 Pentium
(MMX) AMD K5, K6, K6-2 (3D) and Cyrix 6x86,
perhaps some IBM,
plugged into Intel Socket-7, and VX, TX,
HX chipsets
K5
basically = P5. P5 is the intel core on
Pentiums and Pentiums
MMX. i586 PPro AMD K6-3 would be the
closest performance equivalent
i586
First Generation Pentiums MMX, 66Mhz to
233Mhz
i686
PentiumII/III
AMD Athlon (K-7)
i686 Celeron AMD
Duron (K-7 "light")
The whole i686 category is roughly
equivelent to the K6 category
roughly PPro = K6
PII = K6-2
PIII = K6-3
K7
The K7 is a completely new core, and could
be approximated to a i786. Expect that the
PIV is also a new core and could be
approximated to a i786, but the 2 are very
different. So the comparisons sort of end
at this point.

Dear 3Dave:
I really appreciate you looking up that information for me.
I do have an extra drive I could slave on IDE 1 and install Gentoo or SuSE. I'll give it a whirl!
You are a GREAT help!
Thanks!
wayne

Dear 3Dave:
I downloaded SuSE and will install it on a second drive I have.
BTW, the Knoppix V3.2 released on 5-20-2003 was the one that would not boot. I downloaded the V3.2 realeased on 6-6-2003 and it worked fine. I wouldn't have thought that there would have been a difference.
Thanks for the suggestion about SuSE!!
If I have any problems with SuSE I know where I can get help!

I boot up knoppix and then the little logo comes up and it doe a bunch of processing and then at the very end it just says.
"NO init found, try passing init- option to kernel"
And freezes up.
Anyone knwo how to stop this?
I burned it with MagicISO and I burned it TWICE, and bothcopies do the SAME thing.
Please Help!
