have a tripple boot system of
win me
libranet 2.7
suse 8.0
(boot magic)
have apt running on both
suse (apt4rpm)
libranet apt pointed to debian woody repositoriesdid distro update on libranet appears to have worked i get to the gdm but one slight problem linux fails to initialize keyboard
so cant tell it to go run leval 3 and xf86config
loaded suse and did a chown and chmod on the xf86* files so i could restore the old one and wont allow access even though it shows i have full rights as root?
if someone could tell me how either to
1. change the permisions so i can restore the original from suse
or
2. tell me if there is a way without a floppy to force linux to runleval 3
(windows hit f8 mac you hold shift etc...)

OK, not sure what exactly you mean (hint: using pronouns, commas, periods, etc. makes text more readable), so I'll just answer to question 2, since I don't really know what you were even trying to do with the permissions. So, to get to runlevel 3, type "linux 3" to lilo prompt. Or you may want to go single user, "linux S", run xf86config or whatever and then run "init 3" (or whatever number you use) to go back to normal operation.
Oh, if you don't have the lilo prompt showing up, hold down the shift key.
