Kernel panics are almost always caused by:

A.) faulty hardware
B.) crummy proprietary drivers
C.) Incorrect boot parameters

It's best to go through a process of elimination:

1. Have you installed any new hardware lately? If so, it is likely faulty or not installed correctly. Memory would be an especially important issue, but trying to use a cruddy graphics card would cause frequent panics as well.

2. Have you installed drivers for a proprietary video card (NVIDIA or ATI) or used ndiswrapper for a wireless card? These are also likely culprits, but there's little you can do about that, except use generic drivers and / or wait for a driver for your wireless card to be developed.

3. If the error occurs at bootup, you have a configuration problem. Possible problems are buggy APICs and no (or incorrect) root file system specified. Try appending "noapic" and "nolapic" to your kernel line. The "root" filesystem is whatever partition you installed Linux to. This isn't a typical problem unless you use separate partitions, like / and /home.
