Hi everyone, I am a Linux newbie who just got Slackware 7.1 up and running on a 233Mhz Gateway machine. But I am having a display problem in Xwindows. There are 3 lines running vertically are somewhat garbled. It is less of a problem at low resolutions, and worst at the one I want to run in, 1024X768. I don't know what to do, I have gone through xf86config a few hundred times [changing things] with no luck.

The video board is a ATI Rage II mach64. It integrated into the mobo. Its not the monitor because i tried another one, and i don't have the problem when I am using a Linux terminal.

does anyone have any idea as to what this could be or what is causing it?

-thanks in advance.

hi
this definitely looks like a problem with configuration of X for the video chip. editing the config file is hard. i don't know slackware, but don't you have at least one of the setup programs, either XFreeSetup or Xconfigurator. go to the commend line and try those. your chip is definitely supported and it should be detected by Xconfigurator. i installed linux for this chip two weeks ago and Xconfigurator got it right first time, and the display had better colour than windows on the same machine.
cheers
