You're only one, almost two versions behind, but FC3 is a big improvement over RH9. It has a 2.6 kernel instead of 2.4 (faster, better driver support), Xorg instead of XFree86 (better video support), and includes k3b (really good CD/DVD burning program). It doesn't have OpenOffice.org 2.0, but otherwise it looks like it's only significantly behind in or lacking things like MPlayer (fast, efficient video player with support for just about any format) that RedHat probably never will ship.

"...why doesn't staples carry linux anymore?..." Just a guess, but as more people have access to broadband and CD/DVD burners they are more inclined to download it for free rather than go out and pay for it....they can still go and buy the blank disks from Staples!
I still reckon that buying at least one distro complete with manual etc is a good idea for anyone....
