Since I'm interested in getting away from Microsoft products, I've recently started using Lycoris Desktop/LX (which I'm very pleased with). However, I had one question about Java on Linux in general. For some reason it doesn't work very well in chat windows at places I go to, even though they looked fine in the Windows version of Java (downloaded from Sun's website). The main problem is that you can't see much of the text you are trying to type before you send the message. Another problem with it is that copying and pasting of anything won't work. I've had these problems with both versions 1.3.x and 1.4.1, in both Opera and Mozilla, in both Red Hat 9 and Lycoris Desktop/LX.
As an example, here is one of the chat windows:
http://home.comcast.net/~pcfreak42/chat.jpg
In the text box, I've typed "This is typed text", but as you can see, it's barely visible. (which makes it kind of hard if you make a typing mistake)
Is there anything that can be done about this? Or is this just how it'll have to be when I'm in Linux?

Applications compiled with gcc 3.2.x (the standard compiler on Linux distros now) have problems with JVM compiled with previous versions of gcc. I have experimented this with mozilla (compiled with gcc-3.2.1, there was versions compiled with older gcc versions) and with Netscape 7.1. To solve it you need a JRE/JDK compiled with gcc 3.2.x like the latest blackdown versions http://www.blackdown.org (unless otherwise noted) or the latest Sun version 1.4.2_xx
Hope this helps

Well, I'm currently just using the Java and Mozilla that came with Lycoris. (so I would've thought they'd be compatible) I also installed Opera 7.22 myself and have the same problem there.
But when I messed with Red Hat 9 for a couple days, I had downloaded the latest version from Sun... (although I hadn't compiled it myself, I used the RPM, if I remember right, not sure if that'd make a difference)
