I'm trying to install java on my machine, so I can visit some java chat rooms that I know of.
I've gone to Sun, downloaded their version, and followed their instructions to the letter. Didn't seem to do ANYTHING.
I've just started using Linux, and I'm loving it so far, but I can't seem to figure this out. I use the Mozilla browser most of the time.I'm doing most of this stuff in Terminal, and, I gotta admit, this linux command line is tough, for even a veteran DOS user.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you get a response from:
$ which javaCheck that the binary is on your system:
$ locate java | grep bin
or
$ find / -name java | grep binCheck that the directory containing the executable is in your path:
$ set | grep PATH

Have you created a symbolic link in the 'plugins' sub directory in mozilla?
e.g> usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins
I had a similar problem, you want to make sure u are linking to ns610-gcc/libjavaplugin_oji (or whatever it's called).
Make sure have the latest version of Java 1.4.1 - i found an older one didn't work with mozilla 1.4. Also i would upgrade to 1.6 if u ont have it as it's better (fastest browser u can use). I would also use konsole in KDE as you can cut and paste things into it which makes life easier. Surely it's easier than dos tho!
In mozila type 'about:plugins' to see what you have. Basically you need to get the link in the plugins directory (has to be the right version, suprisingly - maybe that's mandrake).
Check where u installed the java files to make sure it is all there? Did you install it as root or as a user? check that. see how u get on and post some more. I'm sure my erstwhile linux buddy 3dave can help more than i!
