Comment:

I succesfully installed vmware 3.1 on a Linux machine [host]. I got working windows XP and 2000 as virtual machines.

I got to installed RH 7.2 as a virtual machine with no problems either. But I can't use X Windows. Just the command prompt. I tried installing the vmware tools [ settings > vmware tools install ... ] but nothing happens.

Any ideas why I can't use the X Windows on my Linux virtual machine?

Thanks

I have the same problem, the VM help says to try these steps. I steal can't start X but my RH is 7.1, you can be more lucky

Power on the virtual machine. The following steps all take place inside the virtual machine, not on the host computer.
Note: If you have an older version of VMware Tools installed, terminate the running version before installing the new one.

Choose Settings > VMware Tools Install.
Note: If you decide not to proceed with the installation of VMware Tools, you may cancel the operation by selecting Settings > Cancel VMware Tools Install.

In a terminal, become root.
su

Mount the VMware Tools CD-ROM, copy its contents to /tmp, then unmount it.
cd /
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt
cp /mnt/vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz /tmp
umount /dev/cdrom

Untar the VMware Tools tar file in /tmp and install it.
cd /tmp
tar zxf vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz
cd vmware-linux-tools
./install.pl

Start X and your graphical environment if they are not started yet.
In an X terminal, launch the VMware Tools background application.
vmware-toolbox &

You may run the VMware Tools background application as root or as a normal user. The application will have additional capabilities if you run it as root.
