I have apache on debian server. I had some problems with sendmail; I tried to change some setting I got message: operation denied. I tried to send an email to a user, I got a message: who are you? even though I logged on as root!!! (:. Any help is highly appreciated? FJ

Do you mean the user answerd your mail and asked you the question "who are you?"?
Might be because you send it as root. the user that receives the mail, will see that the mail is send by root@yourdomain.tld. I can understand that that user reacts like that, I would too!
about sendmail, you might try webmin to configure sendmail. Johan
