The only reason few virus's are on Linux is because all the people who write them use linux. It is not more secure than windows for the most part. In fact most OS's are very un-secure. To be exact Netbsd is the most secure OS claimed I think. The problem is every application you need causes holes. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
