Hi, I have not had any luck getting on the internet in linux. I used to have a zoom winmodem that didn't work, a usr 28.8 external that would not work, but I am fixing on buying a internal ISA usr 56k hardware modem. Will the ISA 56k USR hardware modem work or will that get stuck initilizing also??? Please help I need the internet for school to take online classes.

I would have thought that the external one
would have worked, what errors were you
receiving?

The ISA one should be fine too, especially
if it is one with jumpers on that you can
select the com port, irq etc.

If you know the model numbers, check on
www.linmodems.org and www.linmodems.com

Thanks for your quick reply. The external modem was blown out so I just bought the USR 56k ISA modem. It is a full hardware modem with the jumpers. I just have to put in it later today. What port and IRQ should I set it at when I install it? Thanks

You probably have two com ports on your PC
set as 1 and 2. So as not to conflict, you
should set it as either com 3 or 4.

Com ports 1 and 3 use IRQ 4 by default, com
ports 2 and 4 use IRQ 3. As they share IRQ
numbers, if for example you have a mouse
pluged into your com 1, com 3 will be
unavailable. If you use ps2/usb for your
mouse and have no external serial devices it
shouldn't matter.

com1 == /dev/ttyS0 - IRQ4
com2 == /dev/ttyS1 - IRQ3
com3 == /dev/ttyS2 - IRQ4
com4 == /dev/ttyS3 - IRQ3
