I just installed Suse 7.3 and cannot reach the internet through router/hub which is connected to DSL modem. I assigned macine with IP address and set gateway to router ... no luck. Any suggestions would be helpful.

a bit more information would really help.

can you ping an outside ip address, did you assign the DNS settings, can you ping your router?

what does ifconfig show?

Yes, I can ping an outside IP address (not by hostname though). I assigned the DNS names as specified by my ISP. I can ping the router.

ifcongig shows etho is active but I am not sure what the rest of the info means ... kind of new at this, thanks.

if you can ping an ip, but not an outside hostmask, it is a dns issue, if you put 64.58.76.177 in your web browser you will get to yahoo.com, but if you try www.yahoo.com in your web browser you will never get there, i would check and be sure the DNS settings are set correctly in your network settings for eth0.

Thanks - I checked the name servers and they are correct accordng to my ISP. My resolv.conf file has the following two lines:

nameserver 216.100.99.5
nameserver 216.100.98.5

Each of which I can ping. Any other suggestions?
