Hi I recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on my Pc. I am a new user who just wanted to get away from microsoft for a while. I was wondering how and if it is possible to use programs like AOL instant messg=enger or Trillina on Linux. Is this possible? And also what programs can I use to extract zip files on linix. Thanks from B4.

Are you looking for a good instant messenger for Linux? If you are, take a look at gaim. Chances are that it is already installed on your system...

The problem is not that I don't know what Instant Messenging program to use with Linix. It's just that I don't how how to execute the files after I download them. For example when I try to open GAIM or AIM for Linix it says that "Nautalius has no installed viewer capable of displaying......"
what am I supposed to do?

Can you load Netscape 7? Or, first, do you have it installed? If yes, then just click Window, Instant Messenger.

If the downloaded file you are trying to install has a "rpm" extension, then do this with it:

rpm -i filename

If it has an extension such as "tar.gz", then do this:

tar -pzxvf filename

If it just has an extension of "gz", then

gunzip filename

If it has an extension of "zip", then

unzip filename

I'm unfamiliar with your GAIM error. I've run it before and have not had the problem you are encountering. I normally use Everybuddy because I have an MSN Messenger account, too.

Good luck.
