Comment:

i'm attempting to install rh linx 8; I have one disk separate w/ win2k server and another separate disk (6GB, clean, one partition formatted as FAT32) on which i'm attempting to install linux (dual boot). I'm getting the message "Could not allocate requested partitions: partitioning failed: Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions". Any suggestions?

PS: i checked "force to be a primary partition" and still get the error. Also I've read prior posted messages and none quite clear up the problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

linux has its own partition style and filesystem fat32 wont work for redhat only a umsdos system or loopback or cygwin

what you need to do is have it delete the w32 partition or resize it and leave a unpartitioned space then tell it to create apartition there

if 6gb then allocate 5.5 to a ext3 system set the mount point as /
then take the remaining .5gig and make it a swap partition now your good to go

Since you have a second disk, you should delete all the partitions on it first and leave it unformatted.. as for how to format it, just let the red had installer use free disk space and automatically partition (unless you know what you are doing). Make sure you have boot disks for both windows and linux (you will make one in the install) and then look up one of the many solutions posted here on how to dual boot them. Using the NT boot loader and grub installed on the first sector of the boot partition works for me. but there are as many ways to do this as there are linux distributions.
