Use wubi

http://wubi-installer.org/

this will add a line to the boot ini file in windows. It can be uninstalled via add/remove programs in windows.

It will automatically download ubuntu. Your iso file is not the same file used by wubi. But for all intents & purposes is the same.

If you want to use your iso file, I would first create a new partition using gparted or partition magic, then install to that.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Did you use a special program to extract and burn the files in the ISO image to the disc, or did you just extract and burn the files yourself?

A CD or floppy is not bootable if the files are just copied onto them - a special program must be used to copy the files from the ISO image to the right sectors on the CD.

I use a free program called IMGBurn to burn ISO files to CD's. Thats what I used to burn Ubuntu 5.10 to a CD for my computer.

If you DID use a special program to burn the ISO, download IMGBurn anyway and see if that works.

Also, you must mean Ubuntu 8.04 - there isn't a version 8.14.

And make sure you downloaded the correct image from Ubuntu's website. There are 2 types of Ubuntu CD's - Install CD, to install Ubuntu on your computer, and Live CD, to "test drive" Ubuntu without actually installing it on your computer. Also, each type of CD comes in x86, Mac, and 64 bit. Make sure you get the x86 version.

My recommendation - since you are new to Linux and just want to try Ubuntu (as of now), download and install IMGBurn, download the x86 Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD ISO image, use IMGBurn to burn it to a CD, then restart your computer, make sure the BIOS is configured so the CD drive boots before the HD, stick the CD in, reboot and try it out! Believe me, you will be impressed! Ubuntu 5.10 run great even on my Windows 98 computer!

If you like Ubuntu, download and burn the intsall CD ISO image and install Ubuntu. Unless you have a second HD or another HD partition that doesn't have Windows XP on it, installing Ubuntu will mean destroying Windows XP.

Hope this helps,

-Trent

Haha, your welcome!

Oh yeah, Ubuntu 6.04 and above have the live CD and the install CD all in one CD/ISO, just to let you know.

Your welcome!

I'm not sure about gaming capabilities. Ubuntu uses about the same amount of memory as Windows XP, but because Linux runs and interacts with the computers hardware so differently from Windows, there may be a slight difference, better or worse, in gaming.

Also, some games won't work with Linux. Check up on that.
