Trying to get away from Microsoft so wanting to try putting Linux SUSE on my old system before erasing everything on my new ssystem.

When bootinmg from Disk1 I get te following message:

BSP CPU.......Microcode OK

ISOLINUX 2.06 0x3f70d5a3 isolinux:
cannot boot from thid CD. Please use CD2 or try a Bios update.

When I try CD2 I get the following:

BSP CPU.....Microcode OK

Boot failed.

I have updated the bios amd also the CD rom firmware. This is a Plextor Ultra 40 max SCSI CD rom number PX-40TS. The adapter is an Adaptec AHA-2940AU. They were both purchased somewhere around 1999 and were the state of the art at that time so I can't imagine they aren't compatible.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks......

Just because something was state of the art doesn't mean it ever was Linux-compatible. Regardless, I believe that your SCSI controller is supported, but traditionally, installing Linux from a SCSI device isn't without its troubles. You MAY have to choose to boot in some type of special mode to load the driver for that SCSI controller. Another possibility is to create a boot floppy, then choose your SCSI controller for location of installation media (this is what I have done in the past).

What I would suggest is installing Linux with an IDE CD-ROM drive, then you can choose to use a SCSI drive after it's installed.

Good luck.

I have the same setup with a SCSI plextor drive and a 2940 controller and have not come across any problems istalling GNU/Linux although I haven't tried Suse on it. Have you set your BIOS to boot from floppy as the controller will emulate a floppy drive when trying to boot from a SCSI cdrom drive....

Thanks for the replies. I do have the floppy set as a boot device in the bios but I think as the third device. I did see a message to the effect that the SCSI drive was being seen as a floppy. I'll try moving the floppy up to the second boot device and see if that makes a difference. I had also thought about C-Legend's suggestion of installing an IDE CD-Rom for the installation.

Thanks again for the replies.

Wonder if the cd drive is having issues with burned cd's?

Possible, my plextor drive is getting quite old now and I sometimes (but only sometimes!) have to use the writer to read certain discs (like well used CD-RWs).

"...I'll try moving the floppy up to the second boot device..."
Why not move it to the first boot device? Then either a bootable CD in the SCSI drive will boot, failing that a floppy if inserted, then the hard drive.
