Hi,
I have decided to try Linux but don't know where to start. I have downloaded Red Hat 8 (just over 3 GB) but I don't know how to start the installation. I am currently running Windows XP Pro.

First burn Linux (if you have a cd-writer). Then boot the first disk by putting the disk in your cd-rom drive and reboot your computer. Follow the instructions on your screen.
Or take a look at www.redhat.com
