Yes. Either in it's own partition, although it would have been easier to install XP first - see http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_... . Or in virtualisation, although your RAM is probably too low at the moment - see http://apcmag.com/how_to_virtualize...

256MB isn't very much RAM for Linux or XP. Which version of Linux are you trying to install? Considering the low RAM amount, you *should* be using one of the Xfce distros such as Xubuntu or Mint-Xfce. And XP generally runs poorly with just 256MB. If possible, upgrade to at least 512MB.

As for dual booting your system, you should have planned out the partitioning in advance. How do you currently have the HDD partitioned?

Here's a couple of good guides:

How to dual boot Linux and Windows XP (Linux installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots

As an alternate method, you can install XP 1st, then while within Windows, just pop in the Linux CD & install Linux as an application. There's no partitioning involved, the boot menu is automatically setup & if for some reason you don't like Linux, all you'd need to do is go to Control Panel > Add or Remove, & just uninstall it as you would any other program. Running a virtual machine is another option, but you really don't have enough RAM for that.

Install Xubuntu 8.04 From Within Win XP?

But personally, I recommend Mint 6-Xfce
