I tried to install redhat linux version 9 on on of my old pc's. It's has a cyrix M2 processor and 64 mb of ram with an 8mb of video ram. When I put in the redhat cd and hit enter to install linux in graphical mode it comes back with a error of "crc error, system halted". Does anyone know what this means? How am I supposed to get around this? Thanks from b4

Is the CPU overclocked? I sporadically get that error when booting Linux on my overclocked K6-2.

Also, have you been able to install Redhat 9 with these CDs on any other machine? Are you sure the CDs are good?

No my cpu is not overclocked and I did install redhat 9 on another machine. It works just fine. The cd's are apparently fine. Any insight would we appreciated. Thanks

Well, I wouldn't install Redhat 9 on that computer anyway, unless you aren't planning on using the GUI. Unfortunately, 64 Meg of RAM is too little to run X efficiently. Basically, all physical memory would be used before running anything once X (and accompanying window manager) is loaded.

Try installing Linux in text mode. I'd do that anyway.

By the way, CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Checksum. You seem to have alluded to asking that in your initial post. Now, why Linux is reported an error in this regard is not yet understood. Maybe there's a problem with your memory. If you have it, I'd try some other memory.

Good luck.

I've got exactly the same problem. I know the disk is good, cause there's been like 3 people before me use it,, no problems. My hard drive isn't great(I'm installing it onto my old hard drive) but It 8 GB and I got 256 RAM.

I've been searching on the net and it seams like this is a huge problem. Anyone that get's any info on it please send me a note.

Cheers,

Spence
