Hey, my laptops kinda messed up once again, so i've decided i'm going to reboot AGAIN tonight.

Very annoying... Anyway, i've never used linux properly before, i've only ever used versions that run off windows which have been pretty crappy.

I want to put Linux on my laptop on a partition. I gotta figure that out later by messing lmao. Never done it before but i'll get that done.

It's just that, I've been on some Linux websites, & there's so many damn distributions i don't know which one i need for this.

I'm going to partition my HD with Windows XP, Then install Linux, Does anyone know which Linux I'm gonna need. Please post me a link to the download or something.

Thanks guys
Matt

There are literally 100's of Linux distros to choose from & everyone seems to have their favorite(s). Most distros can be run directly from a CD without even installing it. It runs a bit slower than a true installation but at least you can get a taste in advance. If you don't like it, try another. You can also try running a virtual machine.

I suggest you look at:

Mint
Mepis
PCLinuxOS
Ubuntu & it's offshoots (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Fluxbuntu, Ultimate Edition)

http://distrowatch.com/

For what it's worth, I'm currently running Mint-Xfce on one box & Ultimate Edition 2.2 on another.

Consider booting to live linux cd's. Most are or have live versions. You almost can't bork your system.

Then consider maybe usb flash installs. Almost as fast as hard drive installs if you have a 1G flash drive and you system can boot.

Then I'd consider virtual machines such as virtualbox.

Lastly I'd consider partitions. Some here keep trying to suggest wubi. While it failed on my weird system it should work on common installs.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Hey guys. I tried to partition but i didn't understand how to do it.
There was a part that said Partition, then it lead to a file, but i was expecting to enter 2 or more sizes for my hard drive to be split then let it do the work. but it didn't... I did do something because it rebooted & installed Windows, other than that, i don't know what the heck it done.

I might consider booting linux off a CD, i wan't it to act as though it's on my PC & when i save it goes onto the HD, not some dodgy place from where the VM saves it.

If i'm going to run it off a CD, someone link me to a download which all i gotta do is burn onto CD ? (i'll search myself too but u guys might have a better one or something.)

Thanks
Matt

You're very lucky you didn't completely trash your XP installation. Since you're obviously not familair with Linux or how to setup Linux partitions, stick with Live CDs for the time being...it's almost impossible to trash the system if you run off the CD. And because there are SO many different distros to choose from, it's best to experiment before attempting an actual install.

I'm guessing you jumped right into Ubuntu? Personally, I don't care for it but I do like several other distros that are based on it....Mint for example. I deliberately chose Mint-Xfce because I knew the lightweight Xfce desktop environment would run quicker on my older system (Athlon XP 2000+ w/512MB PC133) than the standard Gnome desktop. Just last nite I installed Vector-Light 6.0 on an even older system (K6-2/500MHz w/128MB PC100) & it performs quite well.

Do a little research, then go to distrowatch & find the distro you wanna try. Download the ISO then burn it to disc, boot off it & see if you like it. If that particular distro isn't for you, try another. Once you find one you like & feel comfortable with, THEN attempt an actual installation. And understand that some installs are a lot more complex than others. Vector, for example, requires a LOT of user input during the install, but there are others that are virtually automatic.

Take your time & do some reading before jumping in over your head.

I'll help if I can, but there are far better Linux helpers available than me...jefro & ernie are two names that come to mind.
