Installing Downloaded programs

i have downloaded the file "gdam-0.942.tar" from the net and have burned it to a CD on windows in order to move it to my machine runing mandrake. How do i go about installing this i'm very new to linux can someone give me a step by step guide thanks.

if you use Mandrake/Redhat you should install from RPM packages - avoid tar/tgz/bz2: http://at.rpmfind.net/opsys/linux/RPM/suse.com/i386/8.1/suse/i586/gdam-0.942-101.i586.html

yeah thanks i looked at that post anmd followed the instructions through, when i run the autogen.sh i get an errormessage about gtk-config, it says it can't find it any ideas, i can't instal gtk from the CD's all of them are ready installed.
