1) Which linux OS? There are many.
2) What is the make and model of the laptop?
3) How is the laptop normally connected to the internet? Cable? Wireless?
4) If there is a wireless signal, is it encrypted? WPA? WEP?

I put in puppy linux. I have a dial up modem. I already got service through aol so I would like to use it.

If you want a single computer to connect (puppy) then you might either try to use the linux aol connector or even try to install "wine" and run the AOL installer with wine.

Otherwise you could use another computer to connect and just let it share the connection with analogx's free proxy.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

are you trying to use the internal modem on the laptop? Puppy does great on dial-up, but doesn't pick up to many internal modems. I would say your first task is to get puppy to recognize your internal modem, if you can't do that, your finished, unless you are using an external serial modem. Then once you get the modem recognized, dump aol and get this:
http://www.copper.net/
You don't need any additional software, just the User ID & access phone number they supply. I used this on may different linux systems back when I had dialup, never had a problem.
Netzero offers 10 Hrs a month of free dial-up. I always used to try putting the user id & access number in puppys dialer, to see what would happen. Usually I would connect, then dissconnect. Last month I was putting together a system for my sister-inlaw, so I tried it again and to my amazement, I was able to connect and stay on, on 2 seperate days. Don't know if this was a fluke or they changed the policy but, it may be worth setting up a free account & trying.
