In linux MSN Messenger is called Mozilla Messenger, and installing it depends on what system you have installed Mandrake, Redhat ect. As for editors there are several emac, advanced text editor just experiment. The best way to learn linux in my opinion is to browse and if you don't understand something line ask a question or read a book.

Mozilla Messenger, from what I have seen, is usable on AOL, not MSN. There is a messenger that I have used to chat with my MSN buddy list, but I can't remember the name of it at the moment.

I have installed ccMSN from http://messenger.compucreations.com on my Compaq notebook with Mandrake 8.1.
Works fine as long as your contacts don't use brackets in their alias.

Go to the site below and download the "TAR/GZ
File(30KBytes) - requires WISH - version 0.3p3". Then
type gunzip TAR/GZ_file | tar xvf filename.tar

I hope this will help you.

Elyas, that error means that you probably downloaded the wrong file, be sure to get the tar.gz file then run "tar -xvzf ccmsn-0.3p3.tar.gz" keep in mind that you can replace the ccmsn with another name of a file that is tar.gz . then all you should have to do is type "./ccmsn" everything should run fine.

elyas, to compile somthing, look around in the directory using the "ls" command. first, you should probably move things around into seperate directories if they are not already there. if you want to make a new directory type "mkdir [the name of hte dir]" to move files into it type "mv (the file name) (the folder)" here is an example.

[root@localhost home]$ mkdir mp3s
[root@localhost home]$ mv *.mp3 /mp3s

to install, sometimes there is an INSTALL file that can help you walk through the process. you can type "gvim INSTALL" i am guessing that have gvim, if not, just use your favorite editor. if there is no INSTALL file to help you, and you need to compile a "*.c" file, then try typing "gcc (file name)" sometimes it will spit out errors that you are missing a file. Most programs that you will probably use will come with an INSTALL file. good luck. you can e-mail me and I can try to help you out with anything.

Hi all. Right. Download the ccmsn tar.gz file (or as in my case it was a .tgz), cd to that directory in console, type 'tar -xvzf ccmsn-0.3p3.tar.gz' (.tgz) then type 'cd ccmsn-0.3p3', and finally simply type 'wish ccmsn' to run it.

This worked for me no problems, and I am running Red Hat 7.2 - Gnome.

If you need any more help post back

HI all.
I've been looking for an MSN messaging program for Linux for a while. Tried a couple but they didn't work. Just downloaded CCMSN untarred it and started it with "wish ccmsn" according to David's instructions in Response Number 25 and it worked perfectly. I signed into MSN and it loaded my contact list instantly! I'm running Mandrake 7.2 by the way.

Thanx all for pointing me to CCMSN!
