Hi,
I have a Pentium 3, 667MHz, 20GB H/D and 128 MB RAM. I partitioned the hard disk to two 10GB drives, C: and D:. C: is installed with Win98SE and D: is an extended DOS partition with logical drive but not formatted. I have been trying in vain to install RedHat Linux 7.1 to D:. It exited midway and could not complete the installation.

I have searched through previous postings but could not find any solution. Please help. I would really appreciate some help here. Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards,
Tracy

I'm not sure what the answer is with Red Hat; I have SuSE. SuSE lets you partition at time of install. I expect that Red Hat does too: read the manual, and don't be so quick to click on "next" during install.

You definitely don't want a single DOS partition for Linux. You will probably want 3 partitions, boot, swap, and linux. All will be formatted ext2, not DOS.

If nothing else fails, I suggest you go back to 1 partition and let the installer do the thinking. I expect it will automatically provide you with the partitions you need.

I am not sure which part of the install process has failed, however to install linux you need to format your "D" drive which is part of the installation process. Choose to manually partition with disk druid when prompted and read the info bar on the left of the screen as to how much to allocate to each partition. I would advise at least the following; / = 256mb, swap 256mb ( always at least double your actual memory), /boot 20mb, /home 512mb, /var 512mb, /usr 1600mb.

a tip, if you leave /usr or /var as your last partition you can extend it with parted at a later date. :) anyway i hope my ramblings help.

Thank you all for your response. I could manually partition with disk druid and the installation could proceed. Thanks again!

Hi

To my despite I am having more or less the same problem. I will really appreciate any help... as my problem is unique but may be beaten.

The problem is with the CD's... I have partitioned the harddisk to two partitions of 2 GIGS each. One of the partitions are for Windows 98.

The problem is that each time the computer restarts it directly opens Win98. How can this be overcome.

Please help.

You have to add an entry into lilo.conf file to dual boot your computer with both options linux and dos.

Must specify LAbel =dos
