I've been running Vista Ultimate as my default OS for quite some time, with XP also in a dual boot setup. I have a 750GB SATA drive partitioned for this. Several months ago I thought I would like to experiment with Ubuntu, so I installed it on another partition. Unfortunately, I never took the time to learn Ubuntu, and really know very little about it. I just stuck with my Windows and thought that I may get around to playing with the Ubuntu "someday." Meanwhile I dealt with the grub boot order manually (Ubuntu established itself as the default OS.) When I did get around to finding out how to change the grub boot order, I found that I could not get into Ubuntu to change it. I honestly do not remember setting up a username and password, but now I found that I needed one to get in. I have very few combinations of usernames and passwords that I use, but I was unable to get past this.
So, I continued on as I had been, until about three weeks ago. Then upon boot up, I would get a black screen with a series of indecipherable symbols. I learned to get beyond this by hitting F10 while booting up and changing the boot order to boot from the hard drive. For some reason this would bring to the familiar screen where I could choose which OS I wanted to boot into.
Yesterday, everything began taking a turn for the worst. I was in Vista and my computer rebooted for no apparent reason. When it came back up, instead of the symbols that had been coming up, I got a black screen which read:
Grub Loading 1.5.
Grub loading please wait...
Error 21I tried to repair from the Vista DVD but I got a message that it could not be repaired automatically. I tried shutting completely down and that didn't seem to help. Several times, I would get the screen to choose which OS to boot into, and it would start to boot into Windows. Then, just as it started to go to my desktop, the monitors would shut off, (as they do when they are receiving no signal,) and I would have to reboot. These episodes seemed to be arbitrary events, and not as a result of any particular action. Finally, finally, I was able to boot into Vista. I immediately set a restore point and, not knowing what else to do, I used Paragon Partition Manager to format the Ubuntu partition to a NFTS partition. I was not able to select two partitions at once, so I did not format the Ubuntu swap partition.
Now, after rebooting I am getting a Grub error 17 and am not having any luck getting back to Windows.
So, what a mess, huh? My own fault for procrastinating and not fixing obvious problems in the beginning. I would appreciate any help you all could give me. I don't want to double post so if you think this would be better posted in a Windows forum, please let me know.
Thanks,

I found a solution here: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/in...
Rebooted with the Vista DVD, chose Repair Computer and went into Command Prompt. Typed in
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixbootSimple as that, works fine... so far.
Hope this serves someone.
