I have a Linux Red hat 7.2 server setup with an Athlon 1.4 GHZ processor. At the login screen (I have the server setup as command prompt) It say I have an i686 arch. Does this mean that I should install only i686 RPMS? I recently installed the kernel source (RPM), it was a i386. I installed it from the Red Hat CD that came with my purchased copy of Red Hat. It seem to install fine (no errors). I am curious though, does it matter if I install i386 RPMS, even though my system is a i686? Please explain this to me. Thank you for your help

doesn't matter (if you install lower than yours). All that means is when the prog was compiled it was done twice and then packaged into an rpm archive. i686 compiling justs add optimisation for the i686 cpu (relevent if any asm code is present
