Try www.linuxiso.org

It's the best place to get linux

I recommend:
if you have a burner and more than 4 gigs to give to linux:

linux mandrake

if you have beetween 1 and 4 gigs or if you don't have a burner:

peanut linux

I think peanut is really the best distribution but it's a little harder than mandrake (like to make a ide burner work you need to remove a # in a file called /etc/lilo.conf and run a command while mandrake does it gor you... or to make the mouse wheel work you must change '' PS/2'' for ''IMPS/2'' in another file (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4) while in mandrake you just click somewhere during install.

Maybe you should try a few distribution.. yeah.. try a few...

as for the partitions. Either you use partition magic or whatever to leave some free (unpartitioned) space. or you use linux's install partition utilities (wich are just as good as partition magic. Linux needs 2 file systems:

- linux swap
for the swap partition

- linux ext2 or ext3 or reifser
for the real partition

thoses file systems are not readable under windows (unless there's a util I don't know of) but from linux you have access to your fat or fat32 or ntfs partitions.

Enjoy the ride!

Download a copy of knoppix and burn it to a CD.
Boot your PC from the knoppix CD and you can
try linux without touching your hard drive.

If you like linux - then get Mandrake 9.0.

Try a Linux-pure distro such as

RedHat (easy to install and to setup)

Slackware (easy to install and a bit hard to setup but it's the most faster - you can run Slack on a 386!!)

Debian (many packages (software) for Debian - dselect is really confusing)

Don't try Mandrake, Lindows, Xandros, ... they're closer to Windows than to Linux.

Try the Linuces I have recommended you and choose the one that suits your needs.
