Hello All,

I am not new to linux... but surely a rookee.

I recently loaded SuSe 8.1. But I am not abe to browse. I have AT&T Cable Modem Internet connection and have Linksys BEFSR41 router. The router is configured as DHCP server and the whole setup is working fine with another PC (Windows 2000) connected on a local LAN.

But my Linux machine is not able to get on the LAN, although physically connected, due to some problem. I hope and think that I can have hybrid systems on my LAN (Linux and Windows).

If I look up YaST 2 control center for the NIC configuration everything looks perfect. My onboard DECchip 21142 ethernet chip is detected. It is configured as DHCP client (Automatically obtain IP address). The IPADDR (I think is local IP address?) is set to 127.0.0.1, NETMASK is set to 255.0.0.0, NETWORK is set to 127.0.0.0

But I cannot browse. The Linksys router LEDs do not glow for this connection. The LED on the back pannel of the PC where the cable is connected to Linux m/c does not glow/blink either. If I do "ping 192.168.1.1" command (this IP address of my linksys router (DHCP server)), then I get a message "Connect: Cannot Access Network"

I dont know what do. All my seeting seem OK. The NIC is detected by linux and it is configured as DHCP client and nothing happens when I browse.

Oh Yeah! I also tried connecting my machine directly to the cable modem (i.e. without the Linksys router). Nothing happens in this case too. My Cable modem does not detect the PC connection (The LED marked PC on the cable modem front panel does not glow). Also, note that I had set the dhcp_hostname_option as the host name for my machine as provided by AT&T when directly connected to cable modem.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

-Sanjeev

the 127.0.0.1 is for your loop device and not your ethernet device.

1. do a ifconfig -a (do you see details of two devices)
2. do ifup eth0 (does is say no such device?)

Hi Malkowich,

I tried:

For Item #1: I saw the details of the three devices: eth0, lo and sit0. For lo (I think loop back device), the TX and RX are OK there are no errors. This probably means device is fine. For eth0, there are 47 TX errors and 133 RX errors. Interrupt is 9 and Base addr is 0xec00

For Item #2:
ifup (debug):eth0
ifup (debug): CONFIG = eth0 INTERFACE = eth0
ifup-wireless (debug): eth0 eth0
ifup-dhcp (debug): eth0 eth0
DHCP client is already running on eth0

Hope this gives some more clue to experts.

thanks for your time.

regards,
Sanjeev
