Hahahaha, No, you need a real, true modem, not a win/soft modem. Linux has had issues with winmodems and trying to get them to function. Sorry for the bad news, another windows gotcha.

WINMODEM? Uh....yeah! That thing will behave like a piece of sh!t even if it's running in Winderz. Either way.... GET A REAL MODEM! Meaning... not a freaking USB modem. How Universal is USB? It's overused and it's all tacking all this trash onto your PCI bus and drawing more bandwidth and current. Use your stuff for what it's designed for... You have a PS/2 port, a keyboard port (I have never figured out the real term for the current type but I've heard both PS/2 and DIN), serial ports, a parallel port, and all that stuff for a reason. Either use one of those serial ports for a good external modem (not a USB, it...won't fit) or get a PCI one that's non-RPI, not a SoftModem, and not a WinModem.

For Dialup internet, you need either an external SERIAL modem (preferrable), or a non-winmodem for internal. It is easier to get an external serial modem. Good ones cost about $100 or so, depending on what you want. Linux does not work with winmodems (softmodems). Besides, softmodems use your cpu to handle everything, rather than modem firmware, thus making the cpu run hotter than with a hardmodem. (firmware is ROM)

Try at http://www.linmodems.org I've got a conexant softk56 modem too and managed to get it working (like sh!t, but working :) Even though, I'm not sure you'll be able to find any driver for the 2.4 kernel (yet). Good luck You'll need it:)

the conexant.com site has published drivers for win2k and me, try them, and they say that they r working on a linux driver
