Eeewwww..... Good luck. That is the most sensitive piece of information on your computer.... Its also the most important peice of info that you need to remember. That also means your SOL on finding out what it is. How can you not know your root password..... If it was easy to find out a root password, it would be a bogus OS... Reinstall dude... Use your first name for a password from now on.....

reboot your machine and during start up when grub bootloader options appear select linux and prees "e" . Now select line containing kernel options and append "single" at end of line. i.e you are going to boot your machine in single mode by providing "single" option to your kernel. Now press "b" and your machine will boot to single mode and take you directly to shell. Use passwd command to change your root password.

If you have a boot floppy for your system give following argument on boot prompt
"linux single" Boot your machine to single mode and change root password.

If somehow you forget your root password, it's not the end of the world! Don't have to reinstall the whole system again. Don't listen to jong357 because apparently, he doesn't know what the heck he is talking about... follow steps from above and if you don't have a bootable floppy disk, then use the first CD of RedHat to boot up your system. You will see a screen asking your what you want to do. Pick the "rescue" option it will drop you into a prompt. Type "passwd" and then enter the new password for root. There is nothing special about it!

it's secure because you have to be at the actuall machine to do these things. cannot be done remotely, (yet anyway).

as long as you don't have your machine sitting out on the street for any one to mess with it's as secure as any pc can be.

So lock the f%^$#@# door, and why hire some crook to work there. etc, etc, etc,

No system is 110% secure, NONE! So stop whinning, and go back to MS if you think they are so much better.

You can do the same thing to any computer system in the world, boot to a disk of somekind and hack/crack your way in if you have phycial access to the box.

If you have some real top secrect stuff to protect get yourself a finger print id lock, or a retina scanner or some other sci-fi kind of spooky secrect locking device. Just don't forget the password, fool.
