Hello every1!!
OK...I tried running TuxRacer...no sound...Quake 3 Windows version with the Linux patch...no sound...audio CD's...no sound!!! :@
The only sound I get is when I go 2 test the sound card, I get a guitar sound...
If I need to recompile the kernel...I don't have the minimum idea on how 2 do it...
I read many tutorials on it but none helps, I don't know how to use it!! :@
Can anybody help?? :'(
Thanx!! ;)

Make sure that the audio lead is connected between your cdrom and soundcard if you want to listen to audio CDs.

Also make sure you run "alsamixer" and turn everything up since the default is muted!!!

Thanx!! ;)
But it's been an hour since I read this and since then I've been looking for alsamixer and NOTHING...:@
Look, I found gnome-alsamixer, but it crashed when I go on File>Properties...
Then I found alsa-utils but I had to compile it, and I have no idea how 2 do this...:( (hmm...I'll start a post asking how 2 compile things on Linux...:@)
But anyways...isn't there a RPM package that doesnt need another package that is the regular alsamixer??
Thanx!! ;)

If you don't have alsamixer, then download alsa-drivers and install it. How hard is it to do these

./configure
make
make install
alsaconf
alsamixer

Okay, here it is...

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.7rc2.tar.bz2

Save it somewhere and when it's done, move to that directory with a "cd" command. Then run the following

tar xvjf alsa-driver-1.0.7rc2.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver-1.0.7rc2
./configure
make
make install
alsaconf (see if it finds your soundcard)
alsamixer (and turn on the volume...)
alsactl store

Configure tells me that it didnt find the kernel sources...:(
So I downloaded the (newer) kernel files...
Then I used that with "./configure --with-kernel=[new kernel files]"
It told me my kernel had ALSA drivers built-in...:@
This is a newer kernel, not the one I'm using now...if I download the files for my current kernel, do I put it in /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/build ??

Thanx!! ;)

You should be able to find the kernel source as an RPM on the original installation CDs....it usually lives in /usr/src/linux. Perhaps you could try compiling the newer 2.6 kernel as it has alsa built in.

Yes it is the thin grey (sometimes black) cable going from the CD to the soundcard and is used for audio CDs.

Try aumix to turn up the volumes.

I had a clean install of Red Hat 9 and had two problems with sound (now both resolved)

1). no sound on CD play
2). no sound on internet

#1 was resolved by connecting the cable from my CD to the soundcard (the audio cable)

#2 was resolved by downloading Open Sound from www.opensound.com and getting the correct drivers (an additional 12 euros) on top of the 23 euros for the program...total of 35 euros. I configed it to start when Linux boots and problem was solved. There may be a way to get the sound to work on the internet without Open Sound but it is a GREAT program...and it resolved my problem.

Hope this helps!
