Hi,
I've installed Linux Redhat 7.1 including samba.
I've been trying for more than 4 days to share files in my linux
machine with a PC runing under Win98, but NO LUCK :-(
I've read a lot of articles on HowTo to do it and I done exactly what was mentioned, but NO LUCK !!!
I just want to add:
- My network's cardes are OK;
- I can ping from Linux machine to Win98 machine;
- My smb.conf file is OK (it's what says tesparm when I run it !)
- When I run: smbclient - L //localhost , it shoes me all the service shared in my smb.conf file. (localhost is the netbios name and the server name in my Linux machine).
- One thing, seems not correct (I think so), when I run:
smbclient //localhost/public ( for example), it returns the message:
"ERROR, ... Invalide network name" !
but I don't know what dose mean and how to remedy.

Please, help me I'm in serious trouble.
Thanks.

Try this...
su to root and go to the samba dir.
smbclient //win98macinename/sharename
ls
this should list everything in the share.

Or

Go to Konqueror and in the address bar

smb://win98machinename

if it does not list either make sure that you have created a local account on you linux machine for the win98 machine.
Also that you have added the win98 machine to the smb.users file and the smb.passwd file.

If you are using SWAT hang it up, I never could get that to work. I had to use the command line. Much easier!

Hi
I can suggest two solutions. more may be available.
1. Down load LinNeighborhood and install. it is an rpm file (this is the simplest, what i feel. (I don't remember the URL -but you can find it easly by searching)
2. Use the lan browsing of KDE. Go to KDE controll center -> network -> lan browsing and make proper seting in LISa etc
then run lisa with option -k. you should be able to browse the network using Konqueror.
all the best

I've done what Mr Darly said, and now I can access my
Win98 machine. But I still cannot access my Linux
machine from Win98 Pc (and what's I want finally)
knowing that I can ping from Win98 machine to Linux
machine and vice versa.

I had the same troubles with samba.
So check out the following :

(if you compiled samba yourself look in /usr/local/samba/bin otherwise in the installpath of RH 7.1)

First check samba's SMBD
type smbclient -L -N
(servername can be hostname or IP adress of the machine on which samba is running)
If this is ok then you'll see the whole share list etc.)
If not smbd cannot bind to TCP port 139 and there's an error

Next check NMBD

nmblookup -B __SAMBA__
(double underscores both sides)
This statement should return the IP adress of the machine on which samba is running.
If not there's an error

Next do nmblookup -B '*'

this should give the same as mentioned above

Next : maybe most important to you.
type nmblookup -d 2 '*'

This should give every computer on the network incl. samba server if not then
i presume you have your firewall blocking the bunch ( I had the same problem)

Next startup lokkit ( in case of ipchains) and disable (say no to ) firewall and try all again. It worked for me ( with the help of SAMS teach yourself samba in 24 hours chapt. 11)

Good luck

Thank you very much. The problem was the firewal. When I set it "of" I got the connection between Linux and Win98. Another thing, DON'T use the "user configurator" program to manage your users, passwords, ... because simply this don't work. You must do it manually.
