first of all, i dont have a scanner. so cant help. as for the cdrw, try checking www.gnulinux.com , I learned how to compile my kernel to make linux use my cdrw

Try SOCR for the Scanner: I haven't tried it yet; SOCR is just an OCR program, but I suppose and I remember I saw in the web site something for scanners as well.
