Comment:

I have a HP DeskJet 3520. It's a USB printer. I'm running Slackware 10.1 with the 2.6.10 kernel. X is not installed since this is used as a server.

I can setup my printer through CUPS via http://localhost:631. It doesn't show any errors. When I try to print a test page, it doesn't do anything. When I go into Completed Jobs, it says it was aborted.

When I do:
# touch test.txt
# echo "Hello World" > test.txt
# cat test.txt > /dev/usb/lp0
Nothing happens.

lsmod shows this:
Module Size Used by
lp 8616 0
usblp 10944 0
parport_pc 24964 1
parport 32648 2 lp,parport_pc
uhci_hcd 30160 0
usbcore 105464 3 usblp,uhci_hcd

I have tried this command:
foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-DeskJet_3520 -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n HP -d hpijs
And got the same results.

The computer is an Everex Explora with an AMD 700 MHz. The chipset is a VIA VT82C686A.

When I do lspci -v, I get this for USB:

00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6202 [USB 2.0 controller] (rev 0e) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. (Wrong ID) USB Controller
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
I/O ports at cc00 [size=32]
Capabilities: [80] Power Management version 2

00:07.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6202 [USB 2.0 controller] (rev 0e) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. (Wrong ID) USB Controller
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
I/O ports at d000 [size=32]
Capabilities: [80] Power Management version 2

I also have a copy of the error_log from cups, if you need it, I will post it.

I also know the printer works because I can print from my laptop if I plug it in directly. I'm also dual-booting my laptop and can print from within Slackware 10.1 on that.
