Comment: Is it possible to view files made in 'Kate' (.kwd) with Windows? I can view .doc files using 'Kate' so I thought maybe I could do the reverse? Or is Microsoft not playing ball again?

Reply: (edit)According to konqueror, Kate saves files in plain text format, so you should be able to save your Kate documents with the .txt extension. Then Windows should recognize the file as text. The one caveat to all this is Windows saves carriage returns differently than Linux, so you will have some strange looking characters throughout your text. Wherever Linux had a carriage return, Windows will display a box character. Now if you are using Kword to create the .kwd files, that is a different matter. Kword is a word processor [part of the Koffice office suite], and saves files in its own file format. I do not use kword, so I do not know if it will save files in the [MS]Word file format. The word processor in Open Office. org does permit saving files this way, and that is what I use for cross platform / suit compatibility. Open Office.org is somewhat resource intensive, but I do not install the Fast start component. This is a component which runs as a daemon at Linux system start. It simply waits for you to open your Open Office.org tools. The way it speeds up load time is it loads part of the suite with the daemon. I do not use it all the time, so I prefer to wait the extra bit of time when I need it.
