How to setup 7.1 as a server?

I am just delving into the world of Linux and am trying to set up a box as a server. Nothing could be simpler in my setup - starting from scratch and doing a clean install. However, I am not able to get eth1 up and running.

I have no legacy programs on the drive as I am installing everything from scratch on an empty drive and I allow the install to wipe the drive clean. The intent is to be one hundred percent Linux. I am trying to install Redhat 7.1 as a server.

I have two ethernet cards.

Both of my ethernet cards function just fine alone and in different slots. I have redone the installation many times to verify this is the case. I always use DHCP for eth0 setup and have never had any problems with either card. But as soon as I install the second ethernet card I cannot get the second card to work.

When I do an installation from scratch with both network cards installed, the routine does indeed detect both cards. I do have two tabs - one labeled eth0 and the other eth1. However, no matter what I try I cannot get eth1 to function.

I can go to Netwrok Configuration and activate the card but it does not make a difference. I still do not have a network connection. I can't ping and I can't see the network (not from the server (Linux) and not from the other clients (Windows 98 and 2000)).

On a reboot the system cannot detect any IP configuration for eth1 and I get a FAILURE every time. If eth1 is deactivated the system boots just fine.

I have checked a lot of forums and help guides and haven't found much information. I have spoken to two others regarding this and they have also indicated they have not been able to get 7.1 set up as a server and their problems are exactly the same as mine. I doubt it is a hardware problem.

Is there a problem with Redhat 7.1 and activating a second ethernet card?

Any help would be required, even if it is a link or reference.

I used 7.1 with two. Only prob i had is
that it would swap the config I set
up. One IP static and the other dynamic.
Every so often they would switch config
for some reason. Running IIS :( now so I
stopped worring about it. Sorry.

I have had the same problem from time to time.. The best way I have found is to set eth0 to DHCP and boot.. and thin run ifconfig
write down the ip info.. edit the rc.inet1 file.. add the new ip and say "NO" to DHCP and ad a line for eth1 /sbin/ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.1 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask
255.255.255.0.. It will take about 10 days for the DHCP lease for eth0 to dry up and then I have to do this over again..

Does anybody know a way around this glitch ?
The are somemany setup's out.. shurely somebody has solved this.
