Folks:
I have installed RH 9.0 and Apache server. I'm new to the linux world and i need more info
about how to set up my own web site on my own RH box so that it can be access from outside.I have linux configured and setup to run on
Rogers cable internet service in Toronto. The IP has been static for at least half year. I don’t know when they are going to assign a new IP address. If so, what can I do ?
I want to register a domain name and
have the IP address for the domain along
with a primary and secondary DNS
nameservers and nameserver IP addresses.
What services do you guys recomand?Does anyone have any step-by-step instructions or can you direct me to such a site?
Merry Christmas and thanks to all!

I would suggest looking at how to set up apache. also if you want free domain go here http://www.dyndns.org/

apache on a rh9 install should come ready to work. you probably only need to put files in the appropriate dir.
you should check though that your machine running RH is actually publicly viewable (does it get past your own firewall?). if you have a standard dsl/cable router, they are sometimes set as default to not let people from outside your network access your machines, but you can change that pretty easily.
as for the dns, as long as you can change dns settings when you do get a new ip it shouldn't be a problem. although remember that that it takes about 24 hours for dns changes to fully propagate in a lot of cases, especially if you are dealing with people like register.com
you should read through httpd.conf as that is where the majority of changes to apache are going to be made. i believe the default location on RH9 is
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
getting comfortable with linux command line is going to be needed. you might want to read up on some basic shell commands.
Oh and you are going to need to set-up a virtual host. it escapes me where the default location is for that on RH.
You can try using redhat-config-httpd it might work, though i've never tried, and would say its better to learn to edit the config files by hand.
also remember to never underestimate the power of google and this site to help you find things out that you're not sure of. also if you know anyone who's into linux, more often than not they'll be pretty willing to help you.
