does anyone know how to reset the monitor resolution?
all is well until the login prompt where i get the message on the monitor:
warning monitor out of range
i've tried a belinea 17" too, the message is the same with the following - 81 khz 76 hz

hey cool im lucky enough to have a larger monitor in the studio so i've got it into gnome
now all i've got to do is fix it from there!

You can edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) with a text editor and modify the lines that look like: Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" Remove all the higher resolutions that your monitor cannot handle. The first one in the list is the default startup resolution and you can flick through the others with Ctrl&Alt&+ or Ctrl&Alt&- (NB the + and - are on the numeric keypad and not by the backspace key!). So for a default resolution of 1024x768: Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
In fact in your case you could have used the Ctrl&Alt&- keyboard shortcut to drop the res down so you could then set it up graphically.
Summary: To set default resolution and colour depth I use XF86Setup - It was a default install with RedHat 6.0 (I think). Stick it in Konsole (or whatever) to check. If not get it from www.redhat.com/swr/i386...
