I am new to Linux. I have two PCs. One is WinXP Pro and the other one is RH8.0(installed as a server). The two pcs can ping each other, but they CANNOT see each other. I installed Samba already, but how can I configure XP so that I can browse the network. Please help..

I just solved that problem with my XP home system. I had to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in the TCP/IP properties and then it saw all of my samba shares.
I never had that problem with Win98 because I think that NetBIOS is enabled by default when you use the MS TCP/IP stack there.

John, I enable the NetBios in my XP, but I still have the same problem, cannot browse the network. When I check the samba status using smbstatus, the following message came up:
Samba version 2.2.5
Service uid gid pid machine
-----------------Failed to open byte range locking database
ERROR: Failed to initialise locking database
Can't initialise locking module - exitingPlease help.

I imagine it's having a problem reading or writing any lock files. I'm using Mandrake 9.0 and it is /var/lock/samba and /var/lock/subsys/smb. You may want to search your /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start-up script to see if it's pointing to a lock area that is not readable/writable. I'm also wondering if this is a bug with the version of samba you have. You may want to check on www.samba.org. I saw that they have a later RPM: samba-2.2.8a-1.i386.rpm for redhat. You would need to un-install your old one and install this one and try it out.
NOTE: Once you get around this problem, a tip to make sure your smb.conf is correct is to try checking your smb.conf using the 'testparm' command. It should be able to read in your smb.conf with no problems and give you a dump of what's configured.
