Download a copy of xine or gxine. It does a great job playing avi, mpg and wmv files. It is a simple install with lots of available frontends. The website is 'xine.sourceforge.net' and hit the 'link xinehq' website at the bottom of the page.

You need to make sure you have the win32 codecs installed if you want to play certain avi/wmv files. Go to the mplayerhq site and download them. All you need to do is extract them to the correct location.
