with only 16mb of ram, you won't be able to run the newer KDE and GNOME GUI's...they req minimum 32 MB with a pretty good video card. Unable to root mount file system happens when the installer can't find logically find your hard drive (this may happen with SCSI controllers for instance).....

I just had the same panic when installing Red Hat 7.1. I booted from DOS and used a DOS program that writes zeros to the drive - erasing the partitioning. I then was able to do the install of linux without the panic. good luck
