I have a realtek AC97 AL650 on board sound chip and running RedHat 8.0. I downloaded a sound driver for linux. I extract the file and try /Make Install but unfortune it doesnt work, i read the read me file it said u have to compile something like ./configure. I have no ideal about where can i direct to the configure file, can any1 help plz! I also dont know what that ./ stands for. I am just a new baby on linux less then 2 month. The following show the read me file said:
Step 1. You must have full configured source for the Linux kernel.
Step 2. Uncompress the source code a. tar xfvj alcsound.tar.bz2 or b. unbzip2 alcsound.tar.bz2 tar -xvf alcsound.tar
Step 3. Turn on sound support (soundcore module)
Step 4. Complied source code a. ./Configure b. make install c. ./snddevices
Step 4. Edit your /etc/modules.conf or conf.modules depending on the Distribution (Please refer to the attached modules.conf)

You need to know whether you have the kernel source installed. Go to the Packages options in the System Settings and make sure the kernel sources are installed. I assume you are able to uncompress the file. Try "insmod soundcore" for the third one. Then for number four you just need to execute those commands. For "./", the dot just means this directory that you are in, and the slash goes after directories. In the modules.conf file, I'm not sure what you need to do, there ought to be instructions on that. It varies by module.
Hope that helps some.

if that dosent work try out alsa sound project. no personal interest, just a happy (newbie) 'customer'. the instructions actually worked! without me having to know anything much. (intel 845ept2 board - ie ac97 onboard chip)
